Why are we doing this? I had a new member ask recently why do we do squats? I realized that some of things that are pretty obvious to me aren’t to everyone. Everything we do at Mission Strength has functional value, meaning that if we can’t point to some useful purpose to the movement outside the gym, we don’t do it. So let’s talk about squats. I see people of all ages that can not get into a proper squat position, this tells me that there is some limitation in the hips, ankles, knees, or back. Over time if we don’t work at this we get less and less mobile in these areas, and lose the strength and ability to get in and out of a proper squat. So why is that not a good thing? Squatting is a part of our daily life: picking things up properly, getting off the toilet, chair, or couch are part of our regular life rhythms. As the ability and strength required to do a proper squat starts to go, we start modifying those daily life movements to accommodate what we can’t do. Extra railings, higher toilets, handles to get up, etc. As we do this we lose more and more of our capabilities. Remember people don’t go to nursing homes or assisted living facilities because they are sick, these aren' t hospitals. They go because they are unable to function in their day to day lives. So next time you're doing squats, burpees (getting up off the floor), farmer carry, sandbag lifts, stepups, rowing, cleans, etc. Try to make the connection on why you're doing this movement and how it applies to your life outside the gym, or just ask me.
Side note: We are starting a boys boxing/fitness class starting next Tuesday Jan 19. The main focus will be to learn how to throw a punch, burn some energy and get some wholesome competition. This is for boys ages 4-8. We have a few spots left. Call Coach Daniel for more info (254)-393-8823. Or email info@missionstrength.com
